You may have heard or read about miracles, maybe a travelling preacher healing the sick and so on. Sometimes they sound like wild or fanciful stories. Maybe you have discounted the possibility of miracles happening today. Or maybe you just don’t know. All of this starts with our own experience and works back. This is not a safe way to work anything out. If we want to discover what God says, or what is the Biblical teaching on these things, we need to start with the Word, and work out from there.
The New Testament is full of stories of miracles, healings, signs and wonders. (actually, so is the Old Testament). This is the foundation upon which we need to build our Christian life and experience.
But what if our experience is different from what we see in the Bible? What if we don’t see these things happening in our own lives? How do we reconcile that? When there is this anomaly, people tend to do one of two things. Their either change their understanding and interpretation of scripture to suit their experience, (like saying that the signs and wonders died out with the disciples), or, they seek to change their experience to suit what we see in scripture. (not as easy, and can be a long road.)
My approach is to change my experience to suit scripture. This can be a hard road at times, but rewarding. This should not be a lonely road though, as we have a great number of people who can help us. That is what the church is for, we are to help each other along the road. And if we are going to walk this road, we will most likely need some guidance, some teaching and some coaching.
